There’s nothing that tastes so wonderful as good food served in the open air. That’s why patios and picnics are so popular.
Now, since 2004, Manitobans can feast al fresco in a completely Manitoba way. Supper-in-the-Field was created in 2004, by Parkland Tourism as the first rural culinary tourism event in Manitoba. It was developed to commemorate the tradition of Fall Suppers. Regional chefs in partnership with the Elkhorn Resort prepared fabulous feasts to be enjoyed in a meadow under a huge white tent with wines and music and all the ambience of fine dining.
In 2007, Supper-in-the-Field took a new direction with new partners and a new focus. Kippechewan, one of the beaches on Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park, became the site for a celebration of organic and regional foods prepared by an impressive team of partners with a common goal – the preparation, promotion and enjoyment of organic and regional (Manitoba) food.
In 2009, Supper-in-the-Field moves again to a location near the Wishing Well and Superintendent’s House. The event remains eco-friendly with biodegradable products going into the compost site at Riding Mountain National Park after dinner.
This popular Parkland culinary event is now a feast of fresh and flavourful organic and regional foods prepared by Chefs Tim Taylor from Dandelion Eatery in Winnipeg and Kelly Ditz of The Farm with help from The Ladies of the Fort from Dauphin.
Pastry Chef Anna Mandziuk from the new Anna’s Indulgence in Brandon and Chocolatier Constance Menzies from the award winning Chocolatier Constance Popp in Winnipeg are creating desserts. Kelly Ditz, a caterer in the city and a Parkland organic farmer in the summer will supply the veggies. Prairie Seasons Bakery and Cafe, Onanole and Neepawa, is providing breads. Organic and fair trade coffee is from Manitoba’s Green Bean. Eat It, Winnipeg, is supplying organic juice.
Supper-in-the-Field will be presented as a Parkland Fall Supper for the 2010 Homecoming, adding typical fall supper foods and several local cooks to the usual line up of chefs and organic food. Because organizers needed help this year, it seemed like a good time to start introducing next year’s theme and some of the cooks, hence Ladies of the Fort. Hopefully, this 2010 event will be positioned as THE Fall Supper to attend while participating in the Homecoming. Details and date will be decided shortly after this year’s event.

Time: 5:30 p.m. appetizers, 6 p.m. dinner
New location: Dinner in a huge white tent facing the lake on the lawn in front of the historic Superintendent’s house and appetizers near the Wishing Well in Wasagaming. Get to the site by car, approximately 5 km from Wasagaming on Hwy 10 north, or cross the lake by boat, or join a special return cruise on the Martese from the Wasagaming dock. The Martese will leave the dock at 5 p.m. and leave the site at 8:30 p.m. The round trip cost is $25.

• Additional menu details will be posted as plans progress. Plates, glasses and cutlery from Canada Green are compost-able and will go to the Park composing site after dinner.
Chefs Tim Taylor from Dandelion Eatery, Kelly Ditz, caterer in Winnipeg and owner of The Farm near Oakburn, and Ladies of the Fort – a group of three of Fort Dauphin Museum’s hardest working volunteers that are great cooks and do a lot of catering in the area. Part of their earnings is donated to the museum.

Dinner tickets are $59 each and include a 24 hour pass to Riding Mountain National Park.
